The Pain of Spinal Cord Trauma

Sarasota Injury Lawyer - Personal & Aggressive Counsel

X-Ray of the Spinal Cord

Florida is a busy state, home to millions of people and a popular tourist destination. You can participate in many exciting activities in Florida, including golfing, boating, swimming, biking and picnics. The large population and the crowded roads and waterways combined with the high incidence of reckless abandon, however, create a perfect storm for serious injury accidents. Florida's famous amusement parks and attractions add to the already strained and failing infrastructure. Car, motorcycle and truck accidents, boating accidents and recreational accidents while swimming, diving, playing and horsing around are all too common and can have devastating consequences.

An impact to the spine, whether during a car accident or an ill-conceived dive into a shallow pool, can injure your spinal cord. Hundreds of thousands of Americans currently live with spinal cord injuries, and over 50 percent are nearly or completely quadriplegic when they leave the hospital.

Causes of Spinal Cord Injuries

Spinal cord injuries cause damage to the spinal nerves, discs and bones. The most common causes of spinal cord trauma include:

  • Motor vehicle accidents, such as car accidents, truck accidents and motorcycle accidents
  • Slips and falls
  • Sports injuries
  • Industrial accidents
  • Gunshot wounds

Spinal cord injuries can occur directly during an accident in a variety of ways:

  • Bone fragments or metal fragments from a vehicle accident or gunshot can lacerate the spinal cord
  • Abnormal twisting or compression during an accident can damage the spinal cord
  • Compression from swelling, bleeding or accumulated fluid can damage the spinal cord

If you already have a weakened spine because of arthritis or osteoporosis, even a minor injury can seriously harm your spinal cord. Complications from spinal cord injuries can cause death, particularly in young children.

Complications from Spinal Cord Injuries

A spinal cord injury has serious consequences, including:

  • Loss of normal bowel and bladder control
  • Numbness, weakness and paralysis
  • Pain
  • Sensory changes
  • Spasticity

Over half of all spinal cord trauma victims leave the hospital quadriplegic or nearly quadriplegic, having limited or no use of their arms and legs. Nearly half of all spinal cord trauma victims are paraplegic or nearly paraplegic, with limited or no use of either their arms or their legs.

Many terrible complications accompany spinal cord trauma, both immediately and in the long term. Some of these complications occur as a direct result of the injury, while others occur because of paralysis, numbness or a bedridden state:

  • Blood pressure changes
  • Kidney disease
  • Deep vein thrombosis
  • Infections
  • Male impotence
  • Shock
  • Bedsores

A person with a severely injured spinal cord has a future filled with surgeries, painful physical therapy and cortisone injections, traction, bed rest, catheterization and hospitalization. A paralyzed individual will need home modifications, expensive medical equipment and potentially around-the-clock attendant care.

Many spine-injured people are unable to work again, and divorce rates are higher post-spinal cord injury. Some must live in hospitals, nursing homes or group homes.

Many spinal cord injury victims are able to live decades after their accidents because of these expensive and painful treatments; some, however, succumb to the complications from their injuries.

The leading causes of death for victims of spinal cord trauma include:

  • Pneumonia
  • Pulmonary embolism
  • Blood poisoning
  • Renal failure
  • Infection
