Did An Uninsured Motorist Hit You?
After an auto accident, your insurance company should pay 80 percent of your medical expenses, but only up to $10,000 unless you have optional Med Pay coverage. If you did not cause the accident, the other driver’s insurance company should pay the rest of your medical bills and expenses.
However, that is assuming the other driver had adequate coverage. What if the other driver has no insurance or is underinsured?
Uninsured/underinsured motorist insurance (UM/UIM) coverage ensures that you are taken care of by your own insurance company if you are in an accident that is not your fault and the at-fault driver’s insurance is inadequate.
Gerber Law highly recommends that every driver obtain uninsured/underinsured motorist coverage. Every auto insurance policy issued in Florida must include UM/UIM coverage, which the insured must reject specifically if he or she does not want that benefit. However, some drivers purchase insurance coverage policies that do not follow state law coverage requirements.
Will UM/UIM Coverage Increase My Premiums?
This additional insurance protection may cost more, but having this coverage could mean you avoid medical bill bankruptcy. UM/UIM insurance pays for medical expenses and lost wages beyond the other party’s insurance policy limits when the coverage is inadequate.
If the other party has no insurance at all, this additional uninsured/underinsured coverage will be your last chance to have your bills paid in full. When you compare UM/UIM coverage to the costs you would incur if an uninsured driver injures you, this additional cost is low.
However, know that insurance companies might discourage you from purchasing uninsured/underinsured motorist coverage, as this will cost them more if you are in an accident. Even if you do have the coverage, the insurance company may try to get out of paying it. This is why you need an attorney on your side immediately after an accident.
